Meeting foreigners in Korea is no longer a rare experience. Since the mid-1990s, foreign workers have steadily arrived to fill jobs in factories, on farms, and in a wide range of industries. Their presence is now woven into the fabric of Korean society.
1. The Start and Evolution of Foreign Influx
The turning point for foreign migration to Korea was the introduction of the “Industrial Trainee System” in the 1990s. In the 2000s, the Employment Permit System made it possible for foreigners to work legally. Since then, foreigners have continued to come for marriage, study, investment, and more.

2. Who’s Staying? Nationality, Age, and Motivation
As of 2025, Korea’s foreign residents break down as follows:
- China: 36.2% (avg. age: 35)
- Vietnam: 11.5% (avg. age: 29)
- Thailand: 7.1% (avg. age: 31)
- USA: 6.4% (avg. age: 38)
- Philippines, Uzbekistan, Russia, etc.: 2–3% each
Most young Asian workers are found in industrial zones and rural areas, while Americans and Japanese are more likely to be professionals or students in major cities. The reasons for staying often reflect their home country’s economic and educational background.
3. Why Do Foreigners Stay in Korea?
The reasons are diverse, but three stand out:
1. Work Opportunities
Korea’s factories, farms, and service industries face chronic labor shortages, driving steady demand for foreign workers.
2. Education & Culture
The Korean Wave (Hallyu), K-pop, and Korean language programs attract students and short-term visitors from all over the world.
3. Family & Marriage
International marriages and family reunification have brought many foreigners to settle in rural areas and small cities.
4. Why Do Some Overstay Their Visas?
Despite legal options, illegal overstayers remain a reality. Why?
- Staying After Visa Expiry:
Many overstay for better earnings, to support families, or because returning home is difficult. - Complex Visa Requirements:
Renewing or changing visas can be complicated, with language barriers and paperwork making the process daunting. - Job Restrictions:
Legal visas often limit job types, so some overstay to access broader employment options.
Important: Overstaying can result in heavy fines, deportation, and being barred from re-entering Korea.
5. How to Renew Your Visa in Korea (By Type)
When your visa is about to expire, here’s what you need to know:
